The female profile, a favorite theme of the painter, dominates this pastel thanks to the refined use of the hues. In the upper half of the work they are surrounded by a pinkish light, while in the lower part they contrast with the sudden transition from the black of the chair to the white of the perfectly delineated design of the shawl. The delightful decoration of the lilac flowers on the girl's head remind us that Zandomeneghi had worked as a fashion designer on first settling in Paris, even though this work was executed when the artist had already started working for Durand-Ruel.
