Raffaello Sorbi, a student of Ciseri at the Academy in
Florence, started quite early to work on historic subjects and genre
scenes that were noted for the great accuracy of the image and virtuosity
of their execution. In fact, so masterful were his paintings that he very
soon became a sought-after and well-paid artist. A friend of the
Macchiaioli group, he was especially influenced in a large series of small
or tiny panels that are particularly appreciated today in the way they
depict aspects and scenes of Tuscan and rural life.
The Paesaggio
toscano in tempo di pioggia is one of these. The field scene
immersed in gray autumn light is characterized by the particular
gracefulness of the design.
