A student of Mussini at the Academy in Siena, Amos Cassioli later studied
in Rome and soon specialized in painting genre, historical and costume
subjects, inspired especially by the life of ancient Rome which he
depicted in perfectly executed archeological settings.
It is very difficult to find works of his on these subjects which made him
so famous, and it is practically impossible to obtain his paintings of
scenes of 19th century bourgeois life. For this reason,
Signore che giocano a biliardo is a true rarity. Its great appeal
derives from the artist's tasteful handling of color and his ability in
formal construction.
