His biography
1901
Enrico Piceni is born in Milan on 26 March, the son of Pompeo, notary and English teacher, and of Amelia Andrizzoia.
1920-21

The young Piceni is one of the prime movers of the «Fiamma Verde», a student magazine printed in Milan.
In July 1920 he starts working at the journal «I.I.I.-Rassegna settimanale illustrata della produzione italiana e dei traffici del Mediterraneo e dell’Oriente» as a theatre critic. In the same month he receives his high school diploma.

1922-23

Between the end of 1922 and March 1923 he works on the evening newspaper «L’Ambrosiano», writing theatre reviews for the Quinte e ridotti column.

1925
After concluding his military service, he joins the Arnoldo Mondadori (Milan) publishing house in January as head of the Press Office.
He translates Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (La Tempestosa, ed. Alpes, Milan) into Italian.
1926
He is editor of the «Almanacco Letterario» for Mondadori with Valentino Bompiani.
Still with Mondadori, he creates the title of a new series, «Le Scie».
1927
He collaborates on the «Rivista d’Italia» and the «Fiera Letteraria».
He translates Maurice Maeterlink’s La vie des termites (La vita delle termiti, ed. A. Mondadori) into Italian.
1928
The articles published on the «Rivista d’Italia» are collected in «La Bancarella delle novità» (ed. Alpes, Milan).
1929
The detective novel series «Gialli Mondadori» is established. Piceni translates the first title of the new series, S.S. Van Dine’s La strana morte del signor Benson, into Italian.
The second series of the «Bancarella delle novità» (ed. Unitas, Milan) is also released.
Unitas also publishes La Ghirlanda, a school textbook anthology, compiled by Enrico Piceni with Fernando Palazzi.
Piceni meets Angelo Sommaruga.
   
1930
He starts working on two journals published in Milan, «Poligono» and «Il Giovedì».
He compiles Aria di Parigi (ed. Bompiani, Milan), a collection of French humourists, with Angelo Frattini.
1931
Ghirlanda per Charlot (ed. Scheiwiller, Milan) is released.
1932
Edited by Piceni, Zandomeneghi is published, the first volume of the series «I Maestri Italiani dell’800», directed by A. Mondadori e by Piceni himself.
1933
The «La Medusa» series appears. The first title of it, Alain Fournier’s Le Grand Meaulnes (Il Grande Amico), is translated into Italian by Piceni.
De Nittis (ed. Istituto Luce, Rome) is released.
1934
A second monography dedicated to De Nittis, again by Piceni, is published in the «I Maestri Italiani dell’800» (ed. A. Mondadori) series.
1935
A. Mondadori publishes Il mio amico Charlot, a revised and expanded version of the Ghirlanda per Charlot (1931).
1937
Piceni translates Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the wind (Via col Vento, ed. A. Mondadori), with A. Salvatore.
1939
For the «Romantica» series (ed. A. Mondadori), he translates Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield
1942
Eterno femminino '800 (ed. Scheiwiller, Milan), is released.
1945
An essay by Piceni about Auguste Renoir is published in the series «Arte moderna straniera» (n. 12, serie A, ed. Hoepli, Milan).
1948-50
Piceni writes articles for the newspaper «Corriere d’Informazione».
1950-61
He works as an art critic for the weekly «Candido».
1952
Mondadori publishes a revised edition of Zandomeneghi (1932).
With Fernanda Wittgens, Piceni organises the Venetian artist’s one-man show at the Venice Biennale.
1955
Mondadori publishes a revised and expanded edition of De Nittis (1934).
1959
With Boldini’s widow, Emilia Cardona, Piceni organises the show Boldini a Parigi, which opens in Florence on 24 May.
1960
He edits and presents the catalogue of the exhibition dedicated to Armando Spadini (San Pellegrino Terme), organized on the initiative of the «Amici dell’Ottocento».
1961
Dieci anni tra quadri e scene (ed. Bramante, Milano) is published. Together with Mia Cinotti, Piceni writes the essay La pittura e la scultura a Milano dal 1815 al 1915, in «Storia di Milano», vol. XV (ed. Fondazione Treccani Alfieri, Milan).
1963
He compiles the catalogue raisonné of De Nittis’ works (ed. Bramante), which includes a historical and critical essay by Mary Pittaluga.
Together with Emilia Cardona, he organises the Giovanni Boldini exhibition at the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris held from April to May.
1964-72
He is editor on the «Catalogo Bolaffi della pittura italiana dell’Ottocento» (ed. Bolaffi, Turin).
1966
With Mario Monteverdi he writes Gli animali nella pittura italiana dell'800 (ed. Arti Grafiche Ricordi, Milan).
1967
With Piceni as editor, the general catalogue of Federico Zandomeneghi’s works (ed. Bramante) is released.
1969
With Mario Monteverdi, Piceni writes Pittura lombarda dell'800 (Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde).
1969-72
He writes articles for the newspaper «Corriere della Sera».
1971
Tra libri e quadri (ed. Ceschina, Milan) is published, as well as I De Nittis di Barletta, (ed. Bramante and Azienda Autonoma di Soggiorno Barletta e Canne), written with Mario Monteverdi.

Still with Mario Monteverdi, Piceni compiles Ermenegildo Agazzi (ed. Amici dell'Arte e degli Artisti, Bergamo) and Pittori italiani dell'Ottocento e del primo Novecento nella Galleria Giannoni in «La Galleria Giannoni» (ed. Istituto Geografico De Agostini e Rotary di Novara).
1979-81
He writes articles for the monthly «Casaviva» (ed. A. Mondadori).
The Bramante publishing house (Busto Arsizio) releases: Zandomeneghi. L’uomo e l’opera and De Nittis. L’uomo e l’opera (1979); Giorgio Belloni (1980); Boldini. L’uomo e l’opera (1981).

Piceni writes the essay «Mondadori, Zandomeneghi e la Dea Combinazione» for the catalogue of the Donazione Arnoldo Mondadori (Palazzo Te, Mantova).
1983-85
He writes the introduction to books on the 19th century published by Allemandi (Turin).
He edits the preface and the bibliographic references for Three Italian Friends of the Impressionists, Boldini, De Nittis, Zandomeneghi , a show held in New York from 14 March to 20 April 1984.
1984-85
He writes two articles for the journal «Arte» (ed. G. Mondadori, Milan): Giuseppe Nittis ci sorprende ancora (September 1984) and Boldini sconosciuto (February 1985).
1986
He dies in Milan on 28 May.
